Quote - Will & Consent (Augustine)

“A man may lose the good things of this life against his will; but if he loses the eternal blessings, he does so with his own consent.”
-Augustine
So not to stir up a lot of trouble
- but I have a question about that quote. Isn’t Augustine the great champion of reformed theology (outside of Calvin / Edwards)? And if so, how can he suggest we give our consent to lose that “eternal blessing” if we’re predestined to have it or not?
Now I personally agree with the quote. But I can’t see it sitting well with our reformed friends.
Christopher says (in his Gary Coleman voice):
“Whatchu talkin’ ’bout E.B.!?”
Seriously, I don’t know which Augustine it is. Normally, I do a “background check” on those folks quoted to gain a little knowledge on them. This was not the case this time, not that it would have mattered, as I agree with the spirit of the quote.
Here’s a post on the “predestined” thought from February.
Grace and peace be with you.
Well I have no reason to doubt it’s THE Augustine. But I’m not really a scholar on the subject. I just know RC Sproul quotes him all the time.
Christopher says:
That makes two of us then that are not scholars, however I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
OK not true.
Grace and peace be with you.
Sometimes I have to drive through KY for work, and on my way through I often pass a sign for a motel which reads “Abe Lincoln never slept here, but you can”
I laugh every time I see it.
